Yet the representation of one minority group in special education, specifically in K-12 schools, appears to have been widely ignored: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered or queer (LGBTQ) students. The the issue of representation of LGBTQ students in special education has grown in importance but seen little progress in terms of explanatory research regarding the identification of disabilities within the LGBTQ population. The body of research about experiences of LGBTQ students in general education has increased substantially, however, research specifically regarding LGBTQ students receiving special education services remains limited.

The COPAA Social and Racial Equity Committee has compiled this list of resources and information for advocates and attorneys representing the educational rights of LGBTQ students.
