2018 Opening Keynote

Dr. Paula Kluth  

We are pleased to announce Dr. Paula Kluth as the opening keynote speaker for the 2018 COPAA Conference. Paula is a consultant, teacher, author, advocate, and independent scholar who works with teachers and families to provide inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities, and to create more responsive and engaging schooling experiences for all learners. Paula is a former special educator who has served as a classroom teacher and inclusion facilitator. Her professional interests include differentiating instruction, active learning, and inclusive schooling. Dr. Kluth will focus on these concepts in relation to the recent Endrew F. Supreme Court decision and advocating for students with disabilities.  She is the author of numerous books and products including Universal Design Daily, 30 Days to the Co-taught Classroom, Don’t We Already Do Inclusion?, From Text Maps to Memory Caps: 100 More Ways to Differentiate Instruction in K-12 Inclusive Classrooms, and You’re Going to Love This Kid!.  Paula is also the director of a documentary film titled We Thought You’d Never Ask: Voices of People with Autism.

Don’t We Already Do Inclusion?: Creating Better Schools for All

Workshop/lecture Description: Are you trying to grow the inclusive schooling model in your community? Do you feel like you have tried everything to create change in your school? Do you want to “sharpen the saw” and become reenergized as an advocate? This workshop is focused on addressing all of these goals and is designed to help a range of stakeholders learn new skills and ask new questions.

This presentation is not only filled with ideas for teaching diverse learners but is also focused on change itself and, more specifically, on how those invested in inclusion can create opportunities that allow all learners to thrive. Come and learn tried and true techniques (e.g., creating a culture of differentiation, focus on benefits for all) as well as some out-of-the box solutions (e.g., “radical” role sharing, using social media to inspire inclusion).
