Led by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and in partnership with over seventy civil rights and disability advocacy organizations, the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) has asked Congress “to fulfill their role in helping educators and communities create and maintain safe schools that afford all students equal educational opportunities by incorporating these principles into all relevant legislation.” Through the Civil Rights Principles for Safe, Healthy, and Inclusive School Climates, the civil rights community articulates eight principles that Congress must consider and adhere to while drafting and finalizing any legislation designed to address school climate, including the discipline and safety of students in our nation’s public schools. COPAA will work with signing partners to weigh in with Congress as they design legislation in the coming weeks.
