Special Education Advocates Respond to College Access Cheating Scandal

In response to recent allegations regarding the complex cheating scandal that involved, among other schemes, parents illegally buying disability accommodations for their children on standardized tests, Denise Marshall, executive director for the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) made the following statement:

This egregious violation of the law, by falsifying the need for accommodations that are intended to promote equity in accessing higher education for students with disabilities, is no trivial matter. In the wake of this week’s announcement by the FBI, COPAA calls on testing companies, universities and others to continue to provide required reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities to support students in their endeavors to access post-secondary education. The illegal activities of a few must not be used to hinder access for the nearly 7 million students with documented disabilities in our public schools.

The process for individuals legitimately striving to secure accommodations is already difficult; requiring substantial knowledge, patience and tenacity. Accessing accommodations is rigorous for most and taken very seriously by the families we serve.

Provision of accommodations to students in legitimate need levels the playing field and promotes equity in access.  Students with disabilities deserve continued opportunities to succeed in college as a pathway to individualized goals and dreams.
