The Arizona Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of a novel program that subsidizes students’ private education, the Arizona Capitol Times reports. The high court let stand a Court of Appeals ruling upholding the state’s Empowerment Scholarship Accounts. Eligible students receive an average of $13,000 in state funds, deposited into an account for their parents to use on their education. The money can be used to pay private school tuition, buy home-schooling curricula, take online courses or hire private tutors. Some can even be saved for future college expenses. The Arizona legislature is debating a vast expansion of the voucher program, and eight other states are considering similar initiatives, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
