Educational Consultant
I began my career in special education in July of 2002 as a special education advocate for a parent training and information center. I have conducted workshops on a variety of topics to include: rights and accommodations under section 504, transition to public school, special education basic rights, IEP rights and strategies, bullying prevention, and transition to adult services. I have been fortunate to have worked closely with families providing one-on-one telephone advocacy and technical assistance.
This experience has given me an understanding of various disabilities and how they impede a child's ability to receive an appropriate education. Families whose children I have assisted, exhibit challenges due to autism, learning disabilities, behavioral issues, developmental delays, traumatic brain injury, school refusal and other health impairments. I participated in coursework at San Diego University and became a Certified Special Education Advocate in 2011. Shortly thereafter, I became a member of the Council of Parent's Attorney's and Advocates (COPAA) which has greatly contributed to my professional development. In 2012, I volunteered as an Educational Representative, Court Appointed Special Advocate for youth in the foster care system and oversaw the educational rights for three transitional age youth.
Most recently, I have represented families in the school districts of Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Riverside, Beaumont and Fullerton USD. I provide a wide scope of supports to families which include: IEP accompaniment, records acquisition, assessment referral, placement observation, educational records review, compliance complaints, behavioral assessments, request for educationally related mental health services and assessment interpretation. I am also the parent of a 29 year old autistic son whose quality of life has skyrocketed due to efforts of his strong circle of support.
