Protecting the Legal and Civil Rights of Students with Disabilities
|Student Rights Initiative (SRI)|
(Sessions Concurrent to COPAA Conference)
DEDICATED TO EMPOWERING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES TO PROTECT AND EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS IN SCHOOLS AND BEYOND
It's time that students with disabilities take their rightful place as equal members of their educational planning teams, and so we are thrilled to welcome them into the unparalleled peer-to-peer network that is COPAA.
To empower students to protect and exercise their rights, we are launching the first ever Student’s Rights Initiative Symposium consisting of 3 days of training and networking!
Congress passed the IDEA, Section 504, The ADA and other federal and state laws to protect equal rights and access to educational opportunities. COPAA members have experienced, time and time again, the full synergistic force of effective IEP teams; where parents and students are equal members, the team works collaboratively, and the resulting individualized program gives the student a real shot at life enrichment as the result of receiving a meaningful, quality education.
The SRI Symposium is your opportunity as a student (at least 14 years of age) to learn, face-to-face, effective strategies from the COPAA network and other self-advocates. Learn information and approaches to enforce civil rights to equal opportunity. Students with and without disabilities are encouraged to apply.
This exciting conference may sell out early. Watch soon for information on how register and complete application. Cost is $50.00 to attend. Travel and hotel costs are on own, SRI participants are eligible to register at the Loews using the COPAA discounted hotel rate (log in to COPAA site required, see Conference).
Space is limited. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis up to the application deadline and approval is on a first-come, first serve basis. Please note the minimum number to hold the session is 6. You will be contacted by one of the instructors if there are questions, and to let you know the status of your application.
You may wish to hold on making travel plans until attendance is confirmed.
It is required that supervision be provided by parent/guardian or chaperone outside of SRI events for all minors and anyone requiring that level of support. Parent/chaperone who plan to attend the COPAA conference events and main conference sessions that run concurrent to SRI. A limited number of discounted rate scholarships are available. Please send a note requesting the discounted rate to email@example.com. If approved a code will be provided to register separately upon approval of the student's participation in SRI.
Please share this opportunity with anyone you think would be a good candidate for the Symposium, and join the SRI and COPAA in the mission of Protecting Rights, Creating Opportunities and Changing Lives!
