picture of circle of handsA key component in achieving COPAA’s mission is collaboration with other organizations and coalitions that share our values and support our work. Some of COPAA’s current collaborative activities include:

Alliance to Prevent Restraint, Aversive Interventions and Seclusion (APRAIS)
COPAA works with 18 other national organizations for the prevention of the use of restraint, seclusion and aversive interventions in our nations public schools.

American Bar Association Section of Litigation Children’s Rights Litigation Committee (CRLC)
COPAA is worked in collaboration with the ABA to produce a national outcome report from the summit: Raising our Hands: Creating a National Strategy for Children’s Right to Education and Counsel to complete a national outcome report. COPAA’s interest in this issue stems from widely reported accounts that children with disabilities are being routinely ejected into alternative schools, denied access to an education with their peers and appropriate educational services. Behavioral Intervention Plans are often ineffective; Functional Behavioral Assessments, poorly conducted. Increasingly, school districts are sending children to face criminal charges for relatively minor incidents.

Center for Law and Education - The Center for Law and Education (CLE) strives to make the right of all students to quality education a reality and to help enable communities to address their own education problems effectively, with an emphasis on assistance to low-income students.

Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD)

COPAA is a longstanding member of this national consortium of approximately 100 associations dedicated to the improvement of disability policy. Our work with CCD centers around its Task Force on Education to design and advocate for improvements in special education policies based on the identified needs of children with disabilities and their families.

Dignity in Schools Campaign - The Dignity in Schools Campaign (DSC) challenges the systemic problem of pushout in our nation's schools and advocates for the human right of every child to a quality education and to be treated with dignity. The DSC unites parents, youth, educators and advocates in a campaign to promote local and national alternatives to a culture of zero-tolerance, punishment and removal.

Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights
The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States. Through advocacy and outreach to targeted constituencies, The Leadership Conference works toward the goal of a more open and just society – an America as good as its ideals.

The National Center for Special Education in Charter Schools Equity Coalition
One of NCSECS’ primary objectives is to develop a dynamic coalition of special education and charter school advocates that support equal access and high quality, effective and appropriate supports for students with learning differences in charter schools and who are committed to working together to develop practical solutions to challenges that hinder access and quality. The Equity Coalition includes representatives from a diverse range of organizations with an interest in students with diverse learning needs, special education programs, charter schools and education reform.
